Japan is located in the western Pacific Ocean, off the coast of East Asia. The archipelago consists of 4 thousand islands. The four largest – Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku – today are connected by bridges and tunnels. The islands of Honshu and Hokkaido were connected by the world’s longest transport tunnel called Seikan, which runs along the bottom of the Sangar Strait. The Honshu and Shikoku Islands combine the three bridges, while the Honshu and Kyushu Islands are connected by two tunnels and a bridge.
In addition, Japan includes the islands of Ryukyu, Bonin and Volkano. The archipelago from the north is washed by the Sea of Okhotsk, from the east and southeast by the Pacific Ocean, from the west by the Japanese and East China Seas.
