Local residents and authorities resist the tradition of building stone towers on the beaches of Tenerife

Between cold snowy winters and sunny summers – only seven hours. That is how much the direct flight from Moscow to Tenerife continues – the most famous Canary island in Russia. The weather at this resort practically does not change throughout the year, the average temperature – plus 23 degrees Celsius. Lenta.ru correspondent visited the island of eternal summer and recommends that travelers follow his example.

Most international flights arrive on the island at Tenerife South Airport, located in the municipalities of Granadilla de Abona and San Miguel. This applies to both scheduled and charter carriers. Los Rodeos in the north serves mainly flights between the Canary Islands and Spain.

Arriving on Tenerife on your own, it should be borne in mind that despite the relatively small size of the island (you can drive through it in three hours), you should not rely on public transport or excursions here. In the first case, spend a lot of time on moving, in the second – a lot of money. The best option is to rent a car, since there are well-known international companies operating on the island and you will be offered a car right at the airport.

As you know, Tenerife is mountains and volcanoes: get ready for ups and downs along numerous serpentines.

The Tenerife authorities are almost desperate and are ready to introduce punitive measures against those who engage in seemingly harmless hobbies – they build towers of stones on the beach …

Local residents and authorities resist the tradition of building stone towers on the beaches of Tenerife
Because exhortations, prohibitions and propaganda in social networks do not bring any result. And only disagree with the builders who were deeply offended when a team of volunteers in an hour destroyed all their man-made structures on Jardin Beach. The very next morning, the turrets were rebuilt, and the beach again began to resemble a cosmic landscape.

It all started back in 1987, when a group of American religious enthusiasts staged a gathering in Tenerife called Harmonic Convergence. What they were doing there, except for nonsense and meditation, no one understood, but the fanatics built a bunch of towers from the stones on the beach. And since then, everyone has put their meaning into these structures, who likes what. And many just imitate the rest – why not?

Space landscape in Tenerife
The problem is that in Tenerife’s cultural history there is nothing like this, and therefore, the locals are sincerely unhappy – why are you, tourists, climbing into your monastery with your charter? Yes, in the religious canons of the Celts, in the traditions of the Peruvian Indians, in Zen culture, there are practices of constructing such gizmos. Yes, here only more than half of those who come to the black beaches of El Beryl, Costa Adeje, Hardin and Puerto de la Cruz do not understand anything in religion, history and culture. But in the presence of a smartphone and the desire to take spectacular pictures against the background of “local flavor.”

So let yourself be photographed, what’s the problem? And the fact that the movement of stones destroys the beaches themselves, which categorically do not like the inhabitants of Tenerife. After all, every stone in the coastal zone is like a tree in a forest – lichens, algae and mosses grow on it. Between the stones dirt accumulates, where a seed can germinate or settle invertebrates, insect gibbers. They eat crabs and insects, those hunted by reptiles and other animals. This is a separate fragile ecosystem, so raising a stone, you destroy someone’s house. But the turrets are made up of thousands of such stones!

Moving stones destroys the beaches themselves, which Tenerife residents strongly dislike
The bare sand from which the stones were removed is vulnerable to wind and water. The weight of the stone column presses the soil and destroys it, and long shadows prevent the plants from receiving sunlight. Living organisms lose their protection and support, the beach quickly becomes empty and dies. From the outside it is not very noticeable, but the conclusions of the scientists are obvious: stop touching the stones on the beaches of Tenerife! And do you think many obeyed? Just the opposite!

It is difficult to walk along the beach, cluttered with turrets, but even worse – when tourists come here for the first time, they begin to think that this is such an important local tradition. And therefore with a light heart imitate her. Attorney Jaime Coello, who is also the director of Fundación Telesforo Bravo-Juan Coello, has proposed a proven method for solving the problem. Legal prohibition of contact with stones and draconian fines for disobedience. It’s always better to hit a negligent tourist in the wallet than in the face.
