Great Britain or the United Kingdom (full official form is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) is an island nation in northwestern Europe. One of the largest states in Europe, a nuclear power, a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Heir to the British Empire, the largest in history, and that existed in the XIX – early XX centuries.
Great Britain is a unitary state (although three of the four historical provinces (except England) have a significant degree of autonomy) with a parliamentary monarchy. Borders: In the north, it borders with Denmark, in the east – with Poland and the Czech Republic, in the south – with Austria and Switzerland, in the west – with France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands. In the north it is washed by the North and Baltic seas.
The main rivers: The main river is the Rhine, among the numerous tributaries of which are Main, Ruhr, Moselle, Neckar, and Lahn. Two other rivers are the Danube in the south of the country and the Elbe with a tributary of the Neisse in the eastern part of Germany. Among the lakes, the largest is Lake Constance, partially located in Austria and Switzerland. Germany consists of 16 federal states, and perhaps it is best to choose 2-3 cities from each district to visit in order to appreciate the diversity and charm of German land. Continue reading
New Zealand, a country literally at the end of the world, consisting of a pair of large islands (North and South) and a host of small ones. It was discovered by the Dutch traveler Abel Tasman in 1642 and got its name in honor of one of the provinces of the Netherlands, Zealand. Later, another famous navigator, the Englishman James Cook, changed the Dutch name of the archipelago: Nieuw Zeeland to English New Zealand, which became the official name of the country.
